Reading the table
The order column shows when each state joined: the first 13 by ratifying the US Constitution, the rest by an act of Congress or a presidential proclamation. North Dakota and South Dakota were admitted on the same day, November 2, 1889; President Benjamin Harrison shuffled the papers so that no one would know which he signed first, and they are numbered 39 and 40 in alphabetical order.
Population figures are the Census Bureau’s estimates for July 1, 2025. Area is total area, land and water together, from the Census Bureau’s state area measurements; for states on the Great Lakes or the coast, the water share can be large, as in Michigan, where more than 40 percent of the total is water.
Each state’s name links to its page, with its history, capital, flag and every official symbol.
