The biggest and the smallest

Population is concentrated in a few large states. California alone has more people than the 21 smallest states combined, and the nine most populous states, from California to North Carolina, are home to more than half of all Americans. At the other end, Wyoming, Vermont and Alaska each have fewer than 750,000 residents, fewer than many single cities.

Who is growing

Between April 2020 and July 2025, the 50 states together grew by about 3.1 percent. The fastest growth was in the South and the Mountain West. Idaho grew by about 10.4 percent, the fastest rate of any state, followed by Florida, South Carolina, Texas and Utah, each at more than 8 percent. In raw numbers, Texas added about 2.6 million people and Florida 1.9 million.

Seven states shrank over the same period, according to the estimates: Hawaii and West Virginia by about 1.5 percent each, New York by about 1 percent, and Louisiana, Illinois, California and Mississippi by smaller amounts. California is still by far the largest state.

About the numbers

These are Census Bureau population estimates for July 1, 2025, not census counts. The estimates start from the 2020 census and add births and immigration and subtract deaths and emigration, so they are revised each year; the next full count is the 2030 census. Growth here is measured from the estimates base for April 1, 2020.
