Tips for learning the capitals
Start with the 17 capitals that are also their state’s largest city, such as Phoenix, Boston, Denver and Atlanta; most students already know them. Then tackle the famous cities that are not capitals: New York’s capital is Albany, California’s is Sacramento, Illinois’s is Springfield and Texas’s is Austin.
Watch for the look-alikes: Columbia is South Carolina’s capital and Columbus is Ohio’s, Charleston is the capital of West Virginia but not of South Carolina, and Portland is the capital of neither Maine nor Oregon. The state capitals quiz is a quick way to check progress.
Questions people ask
- Which capitals do students most often get wrong?
